Lira to perform for Barack Obama

Africa’s First Lady of Afro Soul, the divine Miss Lira, is headed to America’s capital come January 21st 2013, as she performs at Barack Obama’s second-term inauguration ball.

With her ever-graceful composure in the media’s eye, and her stage presence which some call silky and others say is scorching, Lira made no empty promises when she turned her gaze to the United States three years ago, fuelled with “big dreams” and set on enticing a global audience.

And entice the globe she has, as Obama’s inauguration ball- one of many held to thank the supporters and funders of his electoral campaign – is certainly no small event. In 2009, at the Neighbourhood Ball (the first of 10 similar events marking the President’s entry into the White House) Beyonce serenaded the President and First Lady through their opening dance. The evening also featured Jay-Z, Faith Hill, Shakira and Alicia Keys.

Set to give the performance of her life, on Sunday Lira tweeted: “Thanks guys. Its an honour beyond anything I’d imagined thus far. My band and I are extremely excited and are already preparing!”

Justin Bieber SA tickets SOLD OUT!

COMPUTICKET sold more than 50 000 tickets for the Justin Bieber concert in less than an hour for the Cape Town and Joburg shows on Tuesday.

Computicket’s upgraded system allowed Justin Bieber fans to break ticket sale records after 23 000 tickets were sold in Cape Town and 6 000 were sold in Joburg within 30 minutes.

The system has the capacity to process 6 000 online transactions every minute. The Golden Circle tickets for both venues sold out in less than two minutes and general standing tickets in under five minutes.

Big Concerts allocated an additional 6 700 tickets to Joburg and 1 000 to Cape Town after they sold out much faster than the concert organisers had anticipated. The tickets ranged from R350 to R750.

Bieber, who rose to fame after becoming a YouTube sensation, will be touring and performing in SA for the first time in May next year.

The singer became the first artist to have seven songs from a debut album appear on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2009.

The tickets, which went on sale at 9am yesterday, sold out in record times. Even those who had camped out outside the Computicket offices at the V&A Waterfront were left disappointed and empty-handed.

Nabeela Francis, 15, camped outside the Computicket offices in the Victoria Wharf, in the hope of getting her hands on a Golden Circle ticket, only to find out that they were already sold out online.

A number of people resorted to reselling tickets for exaggerated amounts on classifieds website Gumtree.

Speaking on behalf of Computicket, Karen Lowe said that it was unethical for people to resell their tickets in this way. “The law doesn’t prevent it from happening and we cannot guarantee that the tickets being sold here are secure or not, but if a person would like to resell their ticket they should rather bring it back to us (Computicket)” Lowe said.

The 18-year-old Canadian singer will be performing for two nights. He will be in Cape Town on May 8 at the Cape Town Stadium and his second and final concert will be in Joburg at the FNB Stadium on May 12.

Computicket director Gerhard Hayes said they were glad to see how well their new system was working. “We are thrilled that our recent upgrade to the system has proven so successful and that we are able to offer our consumers speedier booking.”

Apple launches iTunes Store in SA

SOUTH African music fans will be spoilt for choice as technology company Apple on Tuesday launched its online iTunes Store in the country.

Although nine years have passed since Apple first introduced the online store, the news will be welcomed by customers who will have access to 20-million songs by international and local artists, at a cost of roughly R6.99 to R8.99 a song.

For local musicians, the launch will provide them with another platform to sell their music at a time when physical CD sales are declining globally.

The launch also comes three months after Simfy Africa introduced its unlimited music download service in South Africa.

Apple said on Tuesday that the iTunes Store would now be available in Russia, Turkey, India, South Africa and 52 additional countries, featuring an “incredible selection” of local and international music from all the major labels and thousands of independent labels.

The iTunes Store features local artists such as Zahara in South Africa, Elka in Russia, Sezen Aksu in Turkey and AR Rahman in India, alongside international artists and classical musicians.

Apple has also made movies available for rent or purchase from the iTunes Store but only for customers in Russia, Turkey, India and Indonesia.

Arthur Goldstuck, MD of technology research provider World Wide Worx, said for many experienced South African iTunes users the launch may seem too little, too late, as they had already found numerous workarounds to overcome Apple’s geographic restrictions.

“However, for the mainstream user, it is a real breakthrough because it means the entire world of recorded music becomes available in digital format,” he said.

Mr Goldstuck said Simfy may have been the catalyst for iTunes finally opening up to South Africa, because of the massive catalogue it made available and the low cost of the service.

“However, it still requires you to use the Simfy software to continue taking advantage of the music you downloaded or to continue streaming the music. Once you’ve bought music on the iTunes Store, you own it, and that is really what the average music buyer wants,” he said.

PUSHA T STRIKES AGAIN, DISSES LIL WAYNE & BIRDMAN ON NEW LUDACRIS TRACK

So we got our hands on an interesting track presumably off of Ludacris‘ upcoming album, “Ludaversal.” The track is called “Tell Me What They Mad For” & it features Pusha T & Swizz Beatz. I can only assume that Swizz produced the track but one thing that I can confirm is that Pusha T is shitting on Lil Wayne & Birdman in his entire verse. Ludacris’ verse just sounds like he’s yelling at tons of people.

Anyway, we have made the decision we won’t be leaking the song. I’m sure someone else eventually will, but it won’t be us. Having said that, here’s a few of the more interesting lyrics from Pusha T’s verse and a snippet of the track.

“With your baby mama fucking every rapper
    in the business
Niggas saying you was better when the drugs
    was in your system
Now your crack swag gone ever since u came
    from prison
Got you tweeting all stupid, is you skatin’, is
    you dissin’
Found out your ghost leased and your
    phantom just rented
Won’t leave it in your name like Pac when he
    went missing
Makaveli lives on so I’m riding on you bitches”

The track is definitely dope, but there’s sure to be some backlash. Check out the snippet below.

JR finally drops his third studio album titled ‘Kool Forever’.

‘Before I’m a rapper I’m a musician’ – JR

Not shy to experiment with his music, he often plays with different sounds and mixes different genres to create an outcome that can only be described as eclectic.

First single ‘Phuma!’ is an upbeat, infectious mix of hip hop and kwaito with bold lyrics that speak about his ‘swag’. Second single ‘Muntu’ is an up-tempo dance track with mbaqanga notes coupled with JR’s fast lyrics and Nokwazi’s powerful hook that seeps into your skin moving your bones involuntary. Similarly the entire album mixes genres to create a unique, heterogeneous sound.

Kool: an admired aesthetic of attitude, behavior, appearance and style. Cool is also an attitude widely adopted by artists and intellectuals, who thereby aided its infiltration into popular culture.

Forever: without end; everlastingly; eternally

‘Kool Forever’ signifies a state of being that is sublime, distinctive and iconic like many of the songs on the album. For this reason JR has partnered up with his friends at Ray-Ban and Sunglass Hut to put you on his swag. This festive season fans will not only get a great album but JR has ensured that they will rock to his beats in style with a great pair of stunners from forever cool Ray-Ban.

Expect the unexpected in KOOL FOREVER. Surprising acts such as Cabo Snoop (Angolan), Nokwazi, AKA and Louise Carver grace the album to contribute to a dynamic product. Having conquered the South African audience JR hopes to ascertain his musical relevance by taking his music into upper Africa and the rest of the world to cultivate a market he had only just tapped before.

‘Kool Forever’ is available in all good music stores nationwide.

Cassidy Agrees To Battle Meek Mill

It’s been a while since there was a high-profile Rap battle, but fans may get their chance to see one soon.

In response to Meek Mill’s offer to battle Cassidy or Murda Mook, Cassidy called into Philadelphia’s Hot 107.9 to discuss. he prospect of battling the fellow Philly emcee.

“Well, you know, that’s what I do, man. I mean, I’m cut from that cloth. I started off with battling so I’m into that but ever since I got a deal and started getting money up in this industry, it wasn’t really beneficial for me to battle especially with a bunch of those dudes that are battling all the time,” explained Cassidy.”I know I’ma bite they head off but it’s like, really, what am I going to get out of it?”

Cassidy explained that Meek’s status made the proposition a good one for Cass. “Meek got that wave right now, he a household name, bigging him up — we definitely can get a nice crowd, get some crazy sponsors and get some chicken up. So it’ll be beneficial for me to do something like that.”

Ne-Yo Pairs Up With Wiz Khalifa For ‘R.E.D.’ Track “Don’t Make Em Like You”

Wiz Khalifa proved to be a lucky charm for Maroon 5, as their pair-up, “Payphone,” shot to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 over the summer. So Ne-Yo is hoping a little of that same magic will rub off on his own tune with the Pittsburgh MC, “Don’t Make Em Like You.” The Harmony Samuels-produced track will appear on Ne-Yo’s delayed R.E.D. LP (now due out on October 31). Overall, it’s a catchy R&B-pop number with a clap-clap mid-tempo beat that doesn’t sound unfamiliar when it comes to Ne-Yo’s output. If it ain’t broke, etc. etc.

“I’m gonna raise a glass, here’s a toast to the ladies with class,” the 32-year-old croons. Later Wiz hops on the track and raps, “We’ll be dancin’ with the stars and throwin’ peace signs at the comets.”

Chris Brown Ends Things With Karrueche For Rihanna

It’s been a long week in the Chris Brown/Karrueche/Rihanna love triangle, but now, we know what we suspected is official. Chris has ended things with longtime girlfriend Karrueche over his “friendship” with Rihanna.

In an exclusive statement to Gossip Cop, Chris stated:

“I have decided to be single to focus on my career. I love Karrueche very much but I don’t want to see her hurt over my friendship with Rihanna. I’d rather be single allowing us to both be happy in our lives.”

Chris and Rihanna were spotted together multiple times while in NYC this week, but nothing was more telling than the cryptic messages he and Karrueche both sent out on Twitter last night.

Once Karrueche tweeted “Bye Baby,” and Chris was spotted just a short while later cuddled up with Rihanna in the VIP section at the Barclays Center while checking out a Jay-Z concert, it was clear that there was trouble in paradise for the couple who have been dating since 2011.

We’re happy to see Chris focusing on his career, working on both himself and his relationship with Rihanna.

J. Cole Disses Diggy Simmons In Live Freestyle

Despite word that the two had squashed their differences this past June, it looks like J. Cole is taking aim Diggy Simmons. The Roc Nation emcee recently called out Diggy’s low album sales in a freestyle live in concert.

Rapper and “HiiiPoWeR” collaborator Kendrick Lamar recently brought out Cole at the Charlotte, NC stop of BET’s Music Matters Tour. Cole, who performed a number of cuts from his recent debut Cole World: The Sideline Story, took the opportunity to take a swing at Diggy over the paltry sales of his album Unexpected Arrival.

“Picture me hating on a young nigga with talent/Album flopped, but it’s cool, he caked out on his allowance,” rapped Cole.

The bad blood between the two originally started after Cole made lewd comments about Diggy’s older sister Vanessa, with whom Cole attended college.

The Houston rapper has delayed the release of his Procrastination Kills 4 mixtape, which was supposed to come out today, until September 4, according to HotNewHipHop.

Willow Smith Writes Letter to Tupac Shakur: “I Know You Are Alive Some Place”

There are many conspiracy theorists who believe that Tupac Shakur is still alive.

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s daughter Willow Smith appears to be one of them.

The 11-year-old singer/rapper, who is signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation record label, recently penned a letter to Tupac that surfaced on the Internet. Of course, Shakur had a well-documented friendship with Willow’s mother, Jada Pinkett Smith, for years before his untimely death in 1996.

“Dear Tupac, I know you are alive some place,” Willow began the letter. “I think that my mommy really misses you.

“Can you please come back?” she asked sweetly. “Can you come back so mommy and me can be happy! I wish you were here…I really do!”

Nicki Minaj Latest Addition as an American Idol Judge

According to Us Weekly, Nicki Minaj will be sitting aside Mariah Carey as a judge for the upcoming season of American Idol. The reports acquired by the gossip publication aren’t 100% certain, and neither Nicki Minaj nor her team YMCMB has commented on the matter officially. Though it is still on speculative stages, if the Queens-bred rapper dons the role, she’ll be the first rapper to be a judge on the long-lasting singing competition program. With Mariah Carey confirmed as a judge on July 23rd, and acts like Pharrell Williams considered for the position, it’ll be an interesting sight to see some of hip-hop and R&B’s biggest names on the show.

Dr. Dre Signs Script Developmental Deal For Drama Series on FX

For those who are waiting for the release of Detox, don’t get your hopes up yet, because there’s now another reason that’s just gotten added to the list of causes that are preventing the long-delayed album’s release.

World famous music mogul and entrepreneur Dr. Dre has reportedly inked a script development deal with cable network FX for a one-hour drama pilot, which will entail stories from both the music and crime businesses in Los Angeles.

Created by writer Sydney Quashi, both Dre and the writer will serve as executive producer of the show. According to Hollywood Reporter television producer Daniel Schneider and producer Brad Bertner will co-executive produce for Dre’s Crucial TV.

Crucial Films started in 2007 with a first-look deal with New Line Cinema. This past March, Dre announced that he’ll be co-producing the horror thriller Thaw under the Crucial Films banner.

This move into television plays a big addition to Dre’s already burgeoning Beats Electronics line, which he co-founded with his label boss Jimmy Iovine. The company found immense success since its release, and its share acquired by Universal Music Group and the Taiwanese HTC Corporation have elevated the company’s status as one of the fastest growing electronics accessories brand. Its net income in 2011 has reported to range in 59 million dollars.

In terms of the actual music, Dr. Dre still oversees his immensely successful hip-hop label Aftermath, which currently serves as home to world’s top rap artists including Eminem, 50 Cent, and the newly signed Kendrick Lamar. A solid release date on the Detox has still yet to be announced.

T.I.’s Trouble Man Album Pushed Back

Fans are going to have to wait just a bit longer to hear the story of the Trouble Man.

In a recent interview with MTV, T.I. alluded that September 4–the release date that had initially been tied to his upcoming solo album–no longer applied. “I’m not trying to paint myself into a corner with a date,” he added. “I’m trying to make sure that the project is the absolute best it could be, and I’m trying to get it down by the end of the year.”

When reached for comment, a source with Atlantic only said the LP would be released “this fall.”

The delay on Tip’s eighth solo effort hasn’t been for a lack of recording, though. “Me being the perfectionist that I am, I’m still tweaking and fine-tuning, trying to perfect all parts of this project,” the Grand Hustle general revealed. “I did, like, 124 songs, and I’ve narrowed it down to 86 now, so now I have to continue to narrow down and continue to make it better.”

As a follow up to his single “Love This Life,” T.I. delivered his latest single, “Go Get It,” in mid-July. The track is produced by T-Minus, and beginning to climb the Billboard charts. After entering the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart three weeks ago at No. 93, it held steady at No. 92 last week before jumping to No. 69 this week. Tip is also featured on his label-mate Trey Songz’s “2 Reasons” single, which settled in at No. 8 on the same chart this week.

Drake Tributes Aaliyah With New Tattoo

Drake’s admiration for Aaliyah is no secret. He has a portrait of the late singer’s face tattooed on his back and he got the Internet buzzing today (August 3) with more ink to seemingly tribute Baby Girl.

Drizzy’s new tattoo, on his ribcage, is of Toronto’s area code, 416, with the number four containing the digit for the number one within it to memorialize Aaliyah’s birthday of January 16 or 1-16.

The image of Drake’s new tattoo comes after reported news that the Young Money rap star will be executive-producing her posthumous album. In addition, he’ll reportedly unleash his next single–one featuring Aaliyah’s vocals–at his OVO Festival in Toronto this Sunday (August 5).

This past April, Timbaland, a known collaborator of the late Aaliyah, said that if Drizzy wants to do the posthumous album correctly that he should call him and Missy Elliott.

“I know they’re trying to drop some Aaliyah records, but if he do do it, it should be with me and him and Missy,” Timbaland said in an interview with Power 105.1. “I don’t know what’s going on, but the proper to do that would be for me, him and Missy to be all on the record. I produce it. But to put it on his album or to put it on his record or whatever, however it be, it would just not be right.
